A family of seven, relying solely on the father’s meagre monthly income of 500 Malaysian Ringgit, is faced with the heart breaking situation of their 1-year and 4-month-old son, Mohammad Nur Adam Bin Mohammad Chukri, suffering from a congenital heart defect. The 52,750 Malaysian Ringgit surgery cost has left this already impoverished family in dire straits.

Adam, hailing from Sabah, was diagnosed with a heart defect just five days after birth. Since then, his fragile body has undergone eight surgeries of varying sizes. His heart condition has worsened, necessitating another operation.

Adam’s mother, Ina, explained that Adam has been in and out of hospitals since he was very young. Due to the severity of his condition, he had to be transferred from a local hospital to the National Heart Centre. Currently, his breathing and feeding rely on machine assistance.

She pointed out that Adam’s family of seven, which includes his father, mother, sister, grandparents, and great-grandparents, all live together. They depend solely on Adam’s father, who does occasional car repair jobs, earning around 500 Ringgit per month. On occasion, Adam’s grandmother takes on sewing work to make some extra money, but it’s not enough to cover the family’s expenses, let alone Adam’s medical bills.

Adam’s mother explained that the family’s elderly members are aging, and she has to care for two young children, especially Adam, who frequently needs hospital visits, making it impossible for her to work outside the home.

CCEP Foundation’s CEO, Yee Poo Yoon, pointed out that Adam’s family is extremely impoverished, and his father lacks income documentation, making it difficult to seek government assistance. Without support from the government or charitable organizations, they wouldn’t be able to afford the medical expenses.

“IJNF (Institute Jantung Negara Foundation) has allocated 30,000 Ringgit for Adam for part of the surgery cost, and the remaining 22,750 Ringgit will be raised with the help of CCEP,” she said.

She mentioned that many families in East Malaysia are in dire poverty, with subpar living conditions and healthcare facilities. Therefore, CCEP is committed to providing assistance in such situations.

“Our aid is not restricted by geographical, racial, or religious boundaries. As long as there is a pressing need, verified through our investigations and the hospital’s confirmation, we will offer assistance.”
